WHAT TO BRING AND OTHER INFORMATION

 

The American Legion California Boys & Girls State will be held at California State University, Sacramento, 6000 J Street, Sacramento, CA 95819 from June 17 to June 24, 2023.

 

The following information is an outline of what to bring and pertinent information relating to this year’s program:

 

Arrival: If you are arriving by bus, you will be arriving between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 17. If you are arriving by private vehicle, please plan to arrive no later than 10:00 a.m. Upon arrival report to the Check-in area in Riverview Hall for registration and presentation of credentials. At that time, you will receive your room assignment and keys. Please be sure that you have your registration (if an alternate) forms and Medical Certificate/Release Form.

 

Private Vehicles: The American Legion California Boys & Girls State does not allow any delegate to bring their own vehicle to the program. Any delegate not arriving via bus transportation provided by their American Legion District must be dropped off no later than 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, June 17, and picked up no earlier than 11:00 p.m. on Friday, June 23 and no later than 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 24 by a parent or legal guardian.

 

What to bring: Since the weather in Sacramento during the week is usually warm, (between 80° – 100°), shorts and T-shirts are daily wear. Delegates/citizens will be asked to wear the branded T-shirt or branded Polo Shirt provided by the program daily. In addition, they may purchase a City/County branded T-shirt included in the Pre-Session Special Offer.

 

Items that should be brought from home:

  • Sleeping bag OR bed linens (extra-long twin) and blanket
  • Pillow
  • Bath towel/hand towel/washcloth

 

Toiletries:

  • All personal hygiene items that you will need for 7 days (No heavily scented products would be appreciated.)

 

Clothes (for 7 days):

  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Shorts
  • Casual shirts/tops for use after each evening’s final program and for Recreation Period, if desired
  • Flipflops for shower
  • Light weight jacket or sweatshirt
  • Hat/baseball cap
  • Sunglasses (optional)

 

Electronics:

You will need a phone, tablet, or laptop to connect with Sac State Wi-Fi, since all elections are electronic, and most election forms and legal forms are online, the Boys State citizens will need a tool to access. Delegates will be provided with access to the proprietary American Legion California Boys & Girls State communication platform.

 

Miscellaneous:

  • Medicine if needed
  • Book(s)
  • Manual of Government/Legal Definitions (can be accessed from the website or delegate can bring hardcopy s/he downloads)
  • Musical instrument (for band or Jamboree activities) [If drummer, we have drum set, just bring sticks.]
  • Camera
  • Money for use at Student Store, vending machines, etc.

  

Medical Services: California Boys & Girls State maintains a fully equipped First Aid Clinic, 24 hours a day. Trained staff is available at all times and a hospital and Urgent Care Clinic are located nearby, if required.

 

Recreation: A scheduled recreation period is provided under proper leadership each day from approximately 4:15 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. This time can also be used for other optional activities.

 

Campaign Materials and Literature: One of the basic foundations of the Boys & Girls State Program is that every delegate has an equal opportunity to achieve whatever they wish to achieve. Do not bring campaign material of any kind with you to the program. If you plan to run for an elective office, sufficient campaign material will be furnished at Boys & Girls State to enable you to make all necessary campaign signs, etc.

Religious Services – Optional: Catholic, Non-Denominational Christian and Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints services will be held on Sunday morning and Jewish services on Friday evening. Space and time will be made available for other religious denominations based on demand.

 

Visitors: Parents and family are welcome to visit the delegates during their stay at The American Legion California Boys & Girls State. Delegates/citizens are not allowed to leave the campus. We ask that visits be limited to the recreation period (4:15 p.m.-6:15 p.m.) Visitors are also welcome at the Opening Program on Saturday evening, the Tuesday night program, the Inaugural Program Wednesday evening, the Jamboree on Thursday evening, and the Closing Program on Friday evening. Visitors must check in at the Chief Counselor’s Office or the Administrator’s office located in Desmond Hall (in the Resident Hall complex). For visitors attending any of the evening events detailed above, Visitor Passes will be available at the event venue. The Visitor Pass must be always worn while visiting the Program.

A Parking Permit must be obtained from California State University, Sacramento.

  

Early Departure- Delegates who leave The American Legion California Boys & Girls State prior to 11:00 p.m. on Friday, June 23, will be deemed to have not completed the program. The American Legion California Boys & Girls State is a very full week, and we ask that delegates plan in advance so that they remain until after their last City meeting (following the Closing Program) on Friday evening. Delegates leaving by private vehicle on Friday evening must check out at the “check out” desk in front of Desmond Hall.
